S84ex/S86ex - Firmware Download Procedure

WARNING: All counter information (e.g. print head) and printer configuration settings will be reset and is recommended you follow the steps below to save/restore current printer settings prior to/after initiating.

NOTE: You will need to extract the files contained in the latest S84ex/S86ex firmware ZIP file and copy the PR61 folder to the root folder of either an SD Card or USB Memory to prior to following steps to update the printer firmware.

1. Save the current printer setting to either SD Card or USB Memory

  1. Power OFF printer
  2. Insert SD Card or USB Memory into the printer
  3. While pressing the [UP] key, power ON the printer and release at the audible beep
  4. Select either “SD CARD” or “USB MEMORY” ” for the memory option being used on the “INTERFACE SELECT” menu and press [ENTER] key
  5. Select “CONFIG” in “UPLOAD SELECT” menu and press [ENTER] key
  6. When “PROGRAM UPLOAD COMPLETED” is displayed, press [ENTER] key to return to the “INTERFACE SELECT” menu
  7. Power OFF the printer

2. Download the firmware files for firmware

NOTE: After the base printer firmware has been updated to 61.00.01.01, you will then need to download firmware files twice.

  1. While pressing the [DOWN] key, power ON the printer and release at the audible beep
  2. Select either “SD CARD” or “USB MEMORY” for the memory option being used on the “INTERFACE SELECT” menu and press [ENTER] key
  3. Select “ALL” in “DOWNLOAD SELECT” and press [ENTER] key
  4. When “PROGRAM DOWNLOAD COMPLETED” is displayed, press [ENTER] key to return to the
    “INTERFACE SELECT” menu
  5. Power OFF the printer
  6. Execute steps 1-5 to download/register CG printer fonts correctly.

3. Factory Reset Procedure

  1. Open the print head and hold [LEFT] + [RIGHT] + [ENTER] keys and power ON S84ex/86ex print engine - release keys upon hearing the audible beep to boot into MAINTENANCE MODE
  2. Once “MAINTENANCE MODE “is displayed on LCD, select “FACTORY MODE” using directional key and press [ENTER]key
  3. At the “COUNTER CLEAR” menu, select “ALL” the directional key and press [ENTER] key
  4. Select “YES” when prompted to “CONFIRM COUNTER SETTING CLR ALL” and press [ENTER] key.
  5. At this point the printer has been reinitialized. The remaining menu items are informational/optional and you can opt to skip past the remaining menu selections
  6. Power printer OFF


4. Perform Factory Test Print and verify checksum values

  1. Press the [FEED] key and power ON S84ex/86ex print engine - release keys upon hearing the audible beep to boot into TEST PRINT MODE
  2. Once “TEST PRINT MODE “is displayed on LCD, select “FACTORY” using directional key and press [ENTER] key
  3. At the “TEST PRINT SIZE menu, select “LARGE” and press [ENTER] key
  4. At the “PITCH POSITION” menu (Adjustment options), press [ENTER] key to initiate test print.
    NOTE: You would need to "jog" the print start signal to have the printer image the Factory Test Print since the default is to ENABLE the Print Start Signal (to disable selection, change selection in the Advanced Menu when printer type is set to Continuous)
  5. Verify the following checksum information matches the values below:

5. Restore Printer Settings/Configuration

  1. While holding the [DOWN] key, power the printer ON and release at the audible beep
  2. Select either “SD CARD” or “USB MEMORY” for the memory option being used on the “INTERFACE SELECT” menu and press [ENTER] key
  3. Select “CONFIG” from list in “DOWNLOAD SELECT” menu and press [ENTER] key
  4. When “PROGRAM DOWNLOAD COMPLETED” is displayed, the configuration settings have been restored.
  5. Power OFF printer, remove memory option and power printer ON to resume normal printing operation.
